Wednesday Group - Painting with Red Liquid Tempura

The evolution of painting is becoming more and more of a social activity, whereby children are drawn to and stay longer when other children are involved in the painting process. This really can be seen in how the children are learning from one another and trying out different ways of painting after observing a friend. Sebastien is really beginning to push the boundaries of painting, looking to define places he can paint. During this session he tries to answer the question "what happens if I paint a friend?" He also deliberately paints his toes after watching Zadie paint her toes last week and again this week.

Along with painting her toes, Zadie practices big, long strokes with the paint brush on the canvas. At one point after she spreads some paint, she transfers the paint brush in her right hand to her left and then reaches down to move the paint with her hand. She did this several times during her exploration both on the canvas and on the plastic tarp. Understanding the properties of paint is a hands on experience and there's nothing like the feeling of slick, wet paint.

Caleb takes a little time to warm up to the paint. Starting slow he works his way from the canvas, to the plastic tarp, to his hand, back to the canvas and then onto his leg. When he touches the paint with his hand, he shakes it. It seems like he's not too sure about the texture. When he paints his leg I love his little cry of displeasure at the feel of the paint but Niko is so encouraging and accepting that he actually tries it again. His exuberant use of the paint brush and the large red painted section of the tarp shows that within the safety of his mother's words and presence he can more freely open himself to the painting experience.
